What is fibromyalgia?

Fibromyalgia is a chronic illness. For most people, it shows up as persistent pain that does not always have a direct cause. In addition, the pain lasts for months at a time. Fibromyalgia is thought to be a nerve condition in which the nerve response is overacting to stimulus. For example, if you stub your toe and have fibromyalgia, the nerves in your toe continue to submit pain signals much longer than someone who does not have fibromyalgia. As a result, your pain lasts longer and may be more intense.

What are the symptoms of fibromyalgia?

Chronic pain is the most common symptom of fibromyalgia. However, people with fibromyalgia may also experience other symptoms including:

  • Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
  • Muscle weakness or instability
  • Balance challenges
  • Extreme fatigue and an inability to get restful sleep
  • Sensitivities to lights, smells, and sounds
  • Limited mobility
  • Headaches
  • Digestive discomforts

People with fibromyalgia may have one or all of these symptoms. It is important to speak with our chiropractor to determine if you have fibromyalgia so we can offer the best individualized treatment plan for your symptoms.

How does chiropractic care provide fibromyalgia relief?

Chiropractic care focuses on improving nerve flow and nerve signals throughout the body. Our chiropractors may perform gentle adjustments on your spine or joints to decrease any additional pressure from the nerves which can reduce your pain. We provide massage therapy to ease muscle pain and reduce muscle tension that may be adding stress. Our services include acupuncture to improve the energy flow throughout the body which helps to decrease inflammation and promote healing.

Our chiropractor may also suggest physical therapy to improve your posture and body alignment. This helps with balance challenges, headaches, and body pain caused by improper posture. We also offer nutritional advice which further decreases inflammation, pain, and digestive discomforts.
